Net farm income is forecast to be $87.5 billion in 2007, up $28.5 billion from 2006 and $30.1 billion above its 10-year average of $57.4 billion. Market prices for corn, wheat, soybeans, dairy products and poultry are above 2006 levels. Farmers have increased the production of corn. The value of crop production is forecast to be up over $30 billion from 2006 and the value of livestock production is forecast to be up $20 billion. Government payments to farmers are expected to total $12.1 billion in 2007, down from the $15.8 billion paid out in 2006.

The nation's official poverty rate declined for the first time this decade, from 12.6 percent in 2005 to 12.3 percent in 2006. There were 36.5 million people in poverty in 2006, not statistically different from 2005.
